Todd A. Thames, PT, MD, FAAFP

Program Director

Med School: University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas
Residency; University of California, Davis/David Grant USAF Medical Center

Dr. Thames joined the program in 2004 after a decade of distinguished service in the U.S. Air Force. He graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston with Highest Honors where he received multiple academic awards including the Edward K. Randall Medal for Academic Excellence, induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society (Life Member), and the designation of Mavis P. Kelsey Scholar Graduate..

Dr. Thames completed his Family Medicine residency training at the University of California, Davis/David Grant Medical Center. He served as chief resident for the program and was honored as the Outstanding Resident upon completion of his training. He has a Bachelors Degree in Physical Therapy as well as experience as an athletic trainer. Before medical school he was a member of a successful private orthopedic and sports medicine practice in Austin, Texas. He enjoys the breadth of clinical family medicine and maintains a particular focus in primary care orthopedic and sports medicine, cardiovascular and kidney disease, and health services organization, administration and policy. He has additional interest in the study and teaching of the history of medicine and medical ethics and humanities.

Dr. Thames is a nationally known speaker on topics ranging from chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease to health policy and organization to medical ethics. He is a member of the National Kidney Foundation Global Consensus Congress on Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes, the Editorial Board for National Kidney Foundation Kidney Learning System and the Center for Medical Humanities and Ethics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He holds a Master of Science in Health Care Administration and Policy from Trinity University in San Antonio.

Dr. Thames shares a very active family life with his wife and two daughters, including membership at St. Andrew Lutheran Church in San Antonio as well as multiple civic and community organizations. He is an avid runner and emphatic San Antonio Spurs fan!
