At the CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency Program we are proud of our compensation package and invite you to explore the many benefits of joining our program, in addition to the outstanding education:

  • Salaries: Our salaries are reviewed annually to ensure they are consistent with or above average resident salaries in similar markets. The pay cycle is every two weeks. Our annual salary structure effective 7/1/09 is:
    • First year—$43,000
    • Second year—$45,938
    • Third year—$47,525
    • Additional pay is afforded the two third-year residents elected to serve as chief residents.
  • Handheld computers: Each resident receives a PDA using the Palm OS© fully equipped with medical reference software and PatientKeeper© wireless clinical management suite. (Value: $500 during PGY 1.)
  • Group medical insurance: Comprehensive Medical Insurance is provided. An option is available to finance other family members with the program covering over 60 percent of the cost. (Value: $7200 per year.)
    • A range of health plan options is available to choose from. Each year the resident can choose to continue the plan or can opt for a change in plan services. 
    • Health plan options are available that reduce taxable income through medical and dental coverage deductions.
  • Group dental insurance: An employee-funded dental plan is is available as an optional service.
  • Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment: A policy paying one-time annual salary is provided. (Value: $72 per year.)
  • Disability insurance: Disability insurance provisions for both short- and long-term disability. (Value: $456 per year.)
  • Term Life insurance coverage: A policy of 1x annual salary is provided, more coverage can be purchased as an option. (Value: $120 per year.)   
  • Professional liability: Comprehensive liability coverage in the amounts of $200,000/$600,000, consistent with current medico-legal and community standards, is provided to the resident. (Value: $2500 per year. )
  • Educational courses: Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS) and Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) courses are provided for all incoming residents; time is allowed away from responsibilities for these, and fee is paid for interns. (Value: $900 during PGY 1.)
    • It is highly encouraged that residents complete a Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) class through their medical school prior to graduating. Most schools offer these classes to fourth-year medical students.
  • Wellness benefit: Discount memberships are provided at a local Spectrum Fitness Center for the resident and his or her family member(s). (Value: $240 per year.)
  • Retirement: Residents are eligible to participate in a 403(b) tax-deferred matched savings plan.
  • Annual physical exam: $100 value available on anniversary date.
  • Meals while on call: Meal tickets are provided for free meals while in-house on call. (Value: $800 per year.)
    • All physicians are given a 25 percent discount on meals in the hospital cafeteria, and residents are welcome to use the physician’s dining room at no cost.
  • Vacation: Three weeks annually. An additional 6 days per year are offered for personal or sick days.
  • CME: $1000 in third year for CME conference.
  • Licensure examination:  First year residents are required to complete Step 3 of the USMLE or COMLEX (whichever is appropriate) at the end of their internship.  The program will schedule time off for the entire class and the registration fee will be paid by the program. (Value:  $800 as PGY 1.)
    • The program also provides one-on-one assistance with completing the Texas Jurisprudence Examination and the Texas Medical Licensure Application.
  • Parking: the program provides free, secured and patrolled, covered parking 24 hours a day, seven days a week. (Value: $420 per year.)
  • Meals for noon conferences: Hot, catered meals are provided for all noon conferences (scheduled daily except Tuesdays). (Value: $1000 per year.)
  • UpToDate subscription: The program provides full access to UpToDate campus-wide, which can be accessed from any computer in the hospital or clinic. (value: $195 per year.)
  • Paid Membership: Annual membership in the American Academy and Texas Academy of Family Physicians, and the Alamo Chapter of the TAFP (value: $35 per year.)
  • The usual uniform stuff: Personalized lab coats with embroidered name and laundry service. (Value: $140 per year.)
  • Total Compensation package by PGY Level:
    • First Year: $55,978 (includes one-time fees for ALSO, NALS, USMLE or COMLEX Step 3, and PDA.)
    • Second Year: $54,878.
    • Third Year: $56,978.
